Seneca Valley Falls Two Straight to the Mighty Tornado

Well, there’s not much else to say other than that. This past Monday night, the Lady Tornado defeated SV 48-30. Butler opened up a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and didn’t look back. Maria Klutinoty led the ladies with 12 points and two treys. Danielle Koehring and Amy Achesinski chipped in 11 points apiece in the victory. On Tuesday night the boys defeated the Raiders 69-47. After the blue ‘n gold got through the first three minutes or so, they off to the races. Tyrell Sales led Butler with 23 (he got in foul trouble, or he would’ve had more). Joel Rehm also had 10 points.

Stat of the Week-- Despite not starting, Maria Klutinoty led the Butler girls in scoring (12).

Midway Through, Everything is Going According to Plan

Well, of course I don’t know what that plan is exactly but you get my point. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams are playing exactly the way they need to be playing at this point of the season: better, with room to grow. The boys stand to go further up in the section (4-5, 2-2), as do the girls (5-3, 3-1). Neither team has yet to peak, which is a good thing. The boys are playing the best ball I’ve seen out of them for a few years. Tyrell Sales is leading the way with consistent double-digit nights game-in and game-out. Joel Rehm and Bobby Freshwater are showing that they have worked on their respective games over the summer and are ready to take this team to the next level. And Nate Hartung is such a presence underneath I can’t put it into words.

The girls are really showing me something as well. The combination of senior Danielle Koehring and freshman Amy Achesinski are proving to be one of the best duos in the section. Senior Heather Spangler continues to wow me and the rest of the crowd with her determination and outright toughness, roughing it out with a taped ankle. And from the bench, it looks like senior Maria Klutinoty has found her shot from beyond the perimeter, so that’s definitely a good thing. The only thing I can say to the girls is this: when you have someone down, stomp on their throat. Don’t let up for one second; never play down to another team’s level. The intensity level must remain high from buzzer to buzzer in order to fulfill your ultimate dream.

Overall, I can say I’m impressed with both squads. But the road won’t get any easier for either team down the stretch. Pine-Richland and New Castle are still lurking for both, and NA will be coming to town soon also. Both team’s have the talent necessary, I just hope they have the most important ingredient for success: the will to be the best.
