Butler slips one past Montour

Wednesday, February 19, 2003
Butler held off lower-seeded Montour last night in the WPIAL Class AAAA first round at North Allegheny. The Golden Tornado (21-7) needed a three-point play in the waning moments to pull out a 55-54 victory. Danielle Koehring scored the winning points with 3.7 seconds left on a layup and a free throw after being fouled. Andrea Snyder gave Montour (17-5) a 54-52 lead when she converted two free throws with 13.4 seconds left. Montour came close to spoiling Koehring's heroics, but Spartans guard Elena Radenkovik's layup came a split-second after the buzzer. Kim Nowakowski led Butler with 18 points. Samantha Woznichak led Montour with 20 points. Butler has won six consecutive games.

Oakland Catholic: Just Bring It!
The rematch is set--Butler vs. Oakland Catholic, part II. But it didn't come without a fight from a very game Central Mountain team. The Lady Tornado were able to get out of Gateway High School with the 56-53 victory. Butler, down by one with under 90 seconds remaining, was able to come up with a steal by Caitlyn Connelly who went to the hoop and made both free throws. Her sister Maura Connelly nailed two foul shots to ice the game. Butler was led by Kim Nowakowski with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Adria Matonak had 18 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. And Caitlyn Connelly scored 14 including 3 treys. Holly Geibel had 7 a team-high 7 assists. 100, 400, 20/20, 1
The above numbers correspond to the following items, in order: Number of career victories for Coach Jonna Burke, number of points scored this season by Kim Nowakowski, point totals for Nowa and Caitlyn Connelly in the first round, and Butler's next opponent. All of this was possible due to the Lady Tornado defeating the Uniontown Red Raiders 54-41 at Aliquippa High School of the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs. Besides being led by Connelly and Nowakowski with 20 points apiece, Adria Matonak added 7 points and 8 rebounds. With the first three numbers out of the way, Butler can now concentrate on #1, the defending state champions Oakland Catholic. The site and time are TBA. Check back later in the week to find out the information.

Tornado Unable to Ground Eagles
The nerves may have been just too much. In front of a Butler-partial crowd at North Allegheny High School, the Lady Tornado were ousted from the WPIAL playoffs by Oakland Catholic 62-46. Butler did, however, out score the Eagles 30-27 in the second half. Butler was led by Adria Matonak with 19 points. Danielle Koehring came off the bench to add 8 points and Kim Nowkowski scored 7 as well as grabbing 8 rebounds. Also the Tornado only turned the ball over 9 times through out the entire game. Butler, 16 and 9, will now wait to find out who their first round opponent will be in the PIAA playoffs beginning March 8.
